At the moment, we are all self-isolating. Yes, this is hard.
It is a mental challenge. Most of us are not used to being at home 24/7, let alone work from home. Online, many people promote learning new skills, working on your summer body, and becoming the best version of yourself. And it is true, if you are not currently working, you have more time at hand than you probably ever had. So why not use it for something productive? Why not get that summer body?
Let me tell you something. We are in the middle of a global pandemic. These are uncertain times. Many of us fear for our families, friends, and loved ones. We grieve the opportunities we have lost, miss social interaction, and look forward to getting back to our old lives. To put it simply, many of us are struggling. And that’s okay.
It is okay not to be okay.
What is not okay, however, is the negative message rooted in all the online posts about productivity. The question we should ask ourselves is: Are you well? This question goes way beyond your body. It is about your mental health, your life, the current situation, and all the other things you could think of.
So, instead of focusing on the social construct of a ‘summer body’ focus on yourself. Don’t worry, you will have a body in summer, no matter what it looks like – and that’s all that matters.
Ask yourself:
- Am I happy?
- What can I do to feel good?
- What moments give me joy?
- What can I say to my loved ones?
- How can I heal from this?
If sport is the answer, then that’s great! If not, then that’s perfectly fine as well. This is a global pandemic, not a boot camp.
Take your time to adjust, accept, and heal. For yourself – and no one else!
